In 1986, then second-term Congressman Ron Coleman of El Paso was also
working with Federal and State officials to conserve Castner Range to be
part of the Franklin Mountains State Park and/or a greater federal
Wilderness area that stretched into New Mexico. As was mentioned in the
February 1976 Texas Monthly “Franklin Mountains Majesty” article, the
Franklin Mountains Wilderness Coalition “is trying to acquire the adjacent
Castner Range from the Army. It’s also trying to interest the Federal Bureau
of Land Management in the linking the park with federally owned land . so
[it does] not become an ecologically isolated island.”
