Sara Husby: Make Castner Range a national monument

Just over 15 months ago, a sliver of our nation was preserved forever when President Obama designated the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. This treasure, which stretches across California’s Coast Ranges, is an ecology paradise that is only matched by its cultural and historical significance.

I was humbled to be part of our regional campaign, where we pressed, poked and prodded our elected officials all the way from our local city councils up to the Oval Office in Washington. Our team knew that we had a unique opportunity: we had a president who was willing to listen to us and a champion in our Congressman, Rep. Mike Thompson, who was willing to remind the Administration that this was the right thing to do.

That is why I am writing today, hoping that during his last few months in office, President Obama can designate the Castner Range National Monument in El Paso.

Despite being an 18-hour drive away, we are connected. We are connected through our wildlife and rare fauna. We are connected through our years of history that dates back thousands of years. And we are connected through our understanding that we have a responsibility to protect our unique lands for future generations.
