El Paso petition gaining support to designate Castner Range as national monument
EL PASO, Texas (CBS4) –- — A recent increase in signatures is sending a message straight from El Paso to President Obama: designate Castner Range as a national monument.
A steady flow of petitioners showed up to the Franklin Mountains Wilderness Coalition meeting Wednesday night ready to sign a show of support for the former Army weapons-testing range, including some of its youngest supporters.
Eight-year-old Robert Cardenas is passionate about keeping Castner Range a national treasure.
“Everywhere else that has those flowers, they shouldn’t put houses because, well, it’s beautiful. And it’s just making the world better,” Robert said.
He even did a school project last year about saving the 3,500 acres of land. It was a video message addressed to POTUS himself.
“We drawed the flowers there and then some grass and she wanted us to draw the mountains in the background,” Robert said.
Now that Robert has signed the petition, and gotten the sticker to prove it, he is ready to spread the word to get more people to sign.
