Doyel: Monument status will preserve Castner Range

As we approach the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, we must come together to make sure our public spaces here in Texas remain protected.

Recently, we have joined local groups in the long-standing effort to permanently conserve the beautiful Castner Range in El Paso.

Castner Range, located in the heart of the Franklin Mountains, has served Texans for decades with its rich natural resources and wildlife. It has provided El Pasoans with everything from scenic views of beautiful orange poppies to open spaces and a fresh water supply.

The best way to protect this stunning area is to establish the Castner Range as a national monument. Designating the Castner Range as a place of national significance would help to tell stories of the wide range of groups who have lived there throughout history.

Early Native American groups first settled the Castner Range area in open campsites over a thousand years ago.
