Castner effort gets 30,000th signature

The effort to get President Obama to declare Castner Range a national monument had already been called unprecedented. On Wednesday, organizers said the effort had gone even further, having gathered their 30,000th signature.
The 7,000-acre parcel adjacent to Franklin Mountain State Park had been used by Fort Bliss for weapons training until the mid-1960s. Janaé Reneaud Field, Executive Director, The Frontera Land Alliance, has said that declaring the parcel a national monument before the Obama administration ends in January might be the last chance to preserve the range’s mountain views from development.
